The Journal Gallery is pleased to present “Some Drawings,” a collection of new work by New York artist Eddie Martinez. The result of Martinez’s practice of constant documentation of his surroundings, the pieces in this show capture the artist’s frenetic energy and joyful, off-kilter view of the world. The drawings feature reoccurring objects and characters, brought to life over and over in Martinez’s wild strokes in pen and marker on paper. This is Eddie Martinez’s first solo show at The Journal Gallery.

Eddie Martinez was born in 1977 and lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. His paintings and drawings have been featured in shows at the Athens Biennial, Zieher Smith and Deitch Projects in New York, LOYAL Gallery in Stockholm, and Peres Projects, Berlin, among others.

This Thursday at Printed Matter!

the journal
(Spring 2008)
Featuring Jonathan Meese, Terence Koh, and Jack Pierson
Magazine Launch
Thursday, May 1, 2008, 5:00 - 7:00 PM

Printed Matter is pleased to announce a launch for the spring edition of the journal, featuring an assembling of artists that includes Jonathan Meese, Terence Koh, Lisa Oppenheim, and Destroyer. The issue also includes a 32-page supplement of drawings by Jack Pierson, who will be present to sign copies. Please join us on Saturday, May 1, 2008 from 5:00 - 7:00 PM. Printed Matter is located at 195 Tenth Avenue, between 21st and 22nd Street, in New York City.

This issue of the journal (Entry 22) features an interview with German enfant terrible Jonathan Meese as well as reproductions of 28 new paintings, collages, and drawings by the artist. The issue also showcases photo portraits by Terence Koh of his family, as well as an interview with Koh, and a discussion with New York artist Lisa Oppenheim. Other contributors include Thomas Awalt Rouse, Mick Barr, Mark Borthwick, Kria Brekkan, Melissa Brown, Destroyer, Josh Dibb, Ry Fyan, Evan Gruzis, Tim Koh, Andrew Kuo, Rivane Neuenschwander, Deanna Templeton, and Michael Williams.

Complimenting the journal is a supplement containing 29 drawings by Jack Pierson titled Ithaka, which is comprised of two series: images based on a postcard of Jackie Kennedy and figure studies by Pierson of models while visiting "life sessions." The two series are positioned against each other for each spread, with Jackie Kennedy's features providing a contrasting detail for the faceless and innocuous models.

Since its founding in 1999 by Michael Nevin, the journal has been a repository for DIY creative culture (both as a zine and as a gallery space since 2004), with a particular bent for skateboard and snowboard culture. The quarterly journal/zine went from saddle stitched to perfect bound--evolving into a full-color magazine that comes coupled with sought-after limited editions by the likes of Dash Snow, Jack Pierson, Will Shine, David Shrigley, and Wolfgang Tillmans, among others.

the journal retails for $15 and can be purchased at Printed Matter's storefront or online at www.printedmatter.org.
