Brooklyn Queens, Curated by Eddie Martinez

The Journal Gallery is proud to present Brooklyn Queens, curated by Eddie Martinez. In Brooklyn Queens, Martinez, a Brooklyn-based painter, has assembled a collection of works by six artists whose work he has followed over the years, artists that provide inspiration in addition to being friend and neighbors. Ranging from the gloss-inspired portraiture of Katherine Bernhardt, to the abstractions of Tauba Auerbach and Gina Beavers, to the appropriation based work of Sam Moyer and Harriet Salmon, and the snapshot-style paintings of Jeanette Mundt, Brooklyn Queens is a mini survey of those working within Martinez's circle.

Evan Gruzis at The Journal Gallery, Opening Friday, May 15

In Touch of Grey, his first solo exhibition at The Journal Gallery, Evan Gruzis takes a vacation from his 'New Wave Noir' style - literally. Inspired by a recent trip to Florida, Touch of Grey is a new selection of ink drawings and paintings that lack the stark silhouettes and graphic contrasts of his previous works. Instead the viewer is taken to a strangely tragic version of Margaritaville through his intimate studies of the Florida landscape and oil paintings based on vignettes of tourist T-shirt designs. The subject matter includes foreclosed homes, sunsets, skulls, tropical birds and fruit, ranging from the simply observational, to an exploration of kitsch.

Carlos Valencia "Goodbye to Romance" Opening Today

Carlos Valencia
Goodbye to Romance

April 9 - May 4, 2009
Opening Reception: Thursday April 9, 6 - 9pm
Gallery Hours: Tuesday - Sunday 12 - 6pm

The Journal Gallery and Eric Laine of Bipolart present Goodbye to Romance, Carlos Valencia's first solo exhibition.

Carlos Valencia likes Peanuts cartoons and The New York Post, Lindsay Lohan and NFL scandals. He prefers American news to French or German news. His work is informed by L. Ron Hubbard, River Phoenix and Ouija boards.

Carlos Valencia is curious about loaded moments found in the subtle details of mass media imagery. He likes pencils, because even after the mistakes are erased you can still trace the lines like memories.
